CRYSTAL EYES

Schwedische Metalbands gibt es ja wie Sand am Meer. Für mich waren CRYSTAL EYES aber immer eine besondere Band, denn irgendwie habe ich von den Jungs bislang noch nie ein richtig schlechtes Album in den Händen gehabt. Ihr Mix aus Power und Melodic Metal sucht wirklich seines Gleichen. Nun haben die Jungs rund um den charismatischen Frontman Mikael Dahl ein neues Album am Start. Grund genug dem guten Mikael mal genauer auf den Zahn zu fühlen.

J.P: Hallo Mikael. vielen Dank das du mir ein paar Fragen zu eurem neuen Album und zu euch selbst als Band beantwortest. Es soll ja Leute geben die euch noch nicht so gut kennen, daher stell dich und die Band doch einfach mal kurz vor und gib uns einen kurzen Überblick über eure Bandgeschichte?

M.D: Also aktuell besteht CRYSTAL EYES aus Niclas Karlsson an der Gitarre, Claes Wikander am Bass, Martin Tilander am Schlagzeug und mir an der Gitarre und hinterm Mikro. Niclas und ich haben die Band 1992 ins Leben gerufen und veröffentlichen nun unsere siebte Scheibe. Unser Bestreben war immer das Gleiche, den Heavy Metal der 80iger zu spielen und ihnen den Leuten näher zu bringen.

J.P: Dieser Tage bringt ihr euer neues Album „Killer“ heraus. Kannst du uns etwas über die Entstehung des Albums erzählen?

M.D: Wie immer eigentlich habe ich alle Demoversionen der Songs eingespielt und aufgenommen und wir machten uns bereit die Aufnahmen so schnell wie möglich zu erledigen. Wir haben „Killer“ in unserem eigenen Studio aufgenommen, wo wir seit 2002 jede Platte eingespielt haben. Fredrik Nordström war für den Mix verantwortlich und wir haben das Album innerhalb von zwei Monaten aufgenommen.

J.P: Eine ganze entscheidende Personaländerung gab es im Vorfeld der Platte. Euer alter Sänger Nico Adamsen hat euch verlassen und du übernahmst wieder den Job hinter dem Mikro den du auch schon bis 2005 inne hattest. Erzähl doch mal wie kam es zu dem Wechsel und warum habt ihr keinen neuen externen Sänger mehr gesucht?

M.D: Da ich schon immer den Gesang der Demosongs aller Alben gemacht habe und eh auf den letzten drei Scheiben mal Haupt mal Nebengesang beigesteuert habe war das dann irgendwie kein Thema! Ich singe ja auch in der JUDAS PRIEST Coverband DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH. Und da viele, mir eingeschlossen, der Meinung  waren das sich mein Gesang über die Jahre immer mehr verbessert hat habe ich dann beschlossen, als Nico uns verlassen hatte, wieder den Part des Sänger mit zu übernehmen. Es stand nie zur Debatte wieder einen anderen Sänger zu holen.

J.P: Es war längere Zeit ruhig um euch, kannst du uns erzählen warum es mit dem neuen Album so lange gedauert hat?

M.D: Es gab eine Menge Gründe für die Verspätung. Der Hauptgrund waren aber sicherlich die personellen Veränderungen in der Band, unsere normalen Jobs und einfach eine kleine Schwächephase was meine Inspiration anging. Die ersten Songs für das neue Album schrieb ich bereits 2009 und den letzten im vorigen Jahr. Das war die längste Songwritiing Periode die wir je hatten. Aber nun merke ich wie die Inspiration wieder zurück kommt und ich sprühe quasi vor neuer Ideen. Außerdem ist das aktuelle Line Up sehr stark, also denke ich, dass das nächste Album nicht mehr so lange auf sich warten lassen wird.
Es gab auch noch ein paar Probleme bei der Findung des VÖ Termins, da wir ja erst im letzten Jahr die Arbeiten am Album beendet haben.

J.P: Eine wichtige Änderung habt ihr bei eurem Label vorgenommen. Von dem deutschen Label Metal Heaven seid ihr zu Massacre Records gewechselt. Was gab den Ausschlag zu diesem Wechsel? Wart ihr mit Metal Heaven nicht mehr zufrieden?

M.D: Ich kann eigentlich nicht schlechtes über unser letztes Label Metal Heaven sagen. Es ist eine kleine Firma die sich größtenteils auf AOR und Melodic Sachen spezialisiert hat und wir waren der Meinung dass es an der Zeit wäre einen weiteren Schritt zu tun. Als wir dann ein paar Demos verschickt hatten, hat Massacre einfach das beste Angebot gemacht. Sie sind ein klassisches Metallabel und ich habe viele ihrer Veröffentlichungen in meinem Plattenschrank

J.P: Gehen wir mal auf ein paar Songs von „Killer“ ein. Für mich sind “Killer”, “Hail the Fallen”, “Spotlight Rebel” und “Dogs on Holy Ground” die hervorstechenden Songs. Willst du uns über diese ein bisschen was erzählen? Hast du eigentlich auch irgendwelche Favoriten auf dem Album? 

M.D: “Killer” war der erste Song den ich geschrieben habe. Das Hauptriff stammte von einem Song namens „Crystal Eyes“ welchen ich 1993 geschrieben hatte. Dieser Song stammt von unserem ersten Demo 1994. Die anderen drei angesprochenen Songs sind klassische Heavy Metal Songs die von Bands wie JUDAS PRIEST, ACCEPT oder MANOWAR beeinflusst wurden.
Es ist immer schwierig eigene Favoriten zu bestimmen, aber ich glaube aktuell ist dies „Spotlight Rebel“.

J.P: Wenn du das neue Album mit dem Vorgänger „Chained“ vergleichst, was glaubst du ist der größte Unterschied zwischen den beiden Platten?

M.D: Ich denke der Gesang ist der größte Unterschied. Und wir sind sehr froh, dass bislang die Reaktionen darauf sehr gut sind. Von den Songs her denke ich ist es etwas kraftvoller und direkter als das letzte Album. Ein weiterer Unterschied ist das dieses Mal Niclas die Rythmusgitarren eingespielt hat, bislang war das immer mein Part, weil ich dadurch den Aufnahmeprozess beschleunigen wollte. Aber Niclas und ich harmonieren so gut zusammen, das das großartig funktioniert hat.

J.P: Wirf doch mal einen Blick zurück auf eure lange Bandkarriere. Was würdest du heute anders machen und was genauso? Gibt es vielleicht eine Platte die du so heute nicht mehr rausbringen würdest?

M.D: Ich bin wirklich stolz auf jedes Album was wir bislang aufgenommen haben, aber ich denke, dass die ersten zwei eine wirklich schlechte Produktion hatten, was wir aber leider nicht ändern konnten. Wenn ich mir rückblickend den ganzen Sängerzirkus hier bei uns anschaue, hätte ich wohl niemals des Gesangsjob aufgegeben und einen anderen Sänger geholt. Das ist das Einzige was ich anders gemacht hätte.

J.P: Was sind denn deine größten musikalischen Vorbilder? Welche CD’s stehen bei dir so im Plattenschrank?

M.D: Meine Lieblingsbands sind ganz klar JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, ACCEPT, MANOWAR, DIO, HELLOWEEN, BLACK SABBATH und viele mehr. Als Lieblingsalben würde ich „The Number oft he Beast“ von IRON MAIDEN, „Defenders of the Faith“ von JUDAS PRIEST, „Operation Mindcrime“ von QUEENSRYCHE, „Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1 +2“ von HELLOWEEN und „Balls to the Wall“ von ACCEPT nennen.

J.P: Mikael wie geht es denn jetzt genau bei dir weiter? Was ist als nächstes mit der Band geplant?

M.D: Wir stellen aktuell unser Liveset zusammen und können es gar nicht erwartet endlich wieder mit diesem starken Line Up auf Tour zu gehen. Aktuell haben wir ein paar interessante Anfragen und es sieht ganz gut aus für eine Tour oder einzelne Shows.

J.P: Hi Mikael it’s me Julian from Rock-Garage.com is speaking. Thank you that you answer me a few questions about your new album and CRYSTAL EYES itself.
For those people who did not know you, can you introduce the band first and show the previous career?

M.D: Crystal Eyes today is me on vocals and guitar, Niclas Karlsson on guitar, Claes Wikander on bass and Martin Tilander on drums. Me and Niclas started the band in 1992 and we're just about to release our 7th record. Even though it's been over 20 years our main goal is still the same, to play Heavy Metal as it was in the eighties.

J.P: So you new record “Killer” is quit near before the release. Can you tell us something about the „birth“ of the record? How were the recording sessions?

M.D: As always I had recorded demo-versions of all songs and we all prepared ourselves to make the recording as quick as possible. We have our own studio which we've recorded everything in since 2002 and that's where we recorded “Killer”. Fredrik Nordström came and set the sound for a day in June last year and we recorded ourselves for about 2 months. The mixing was done in Studio Fredman in November and Fredrik did a great mix as always.

J.P: So you have a big personal change before the record comes on the way. Your singer Nico Adamsen leave you and you change to the singer job which you have till 2005. So why did you make these decision and why did you not try another external singer?

M.D: I've recorded all vocals on the demo-recordings of all records and been singing on the rehearsals the whole time. I also sang the last song on the 3 previous records and backing vocals on all songs and I'm still the singer of the Judas Priest tribute band Defenders Of The Faith since 1993. Everyone including myself though my vocals were getting better and better and when Nico left I didn't think twice about getting back on the lead vocal position. It was never an option to try another singer.

J.P: For a long time there will be silence around CRYSTAL EYES. What have you done while the last years? Why did it take so much time to recording “Killer”?

M.D: There are actually a lot of reasons for this but the main ones are member changes, full time jobs and lack of inspiration. I wrote the first song in 2009 and the last one was finished early last year and that's the longest time in the history of Crystal Eyes but now I feel the inspiration is coming back and the latest line-up is stronger than ever so hopefully it won't be to long before we can release another record. Some problems in the release schedule also seemed to push the release date. I mean we actually finished the recording a year ago.

J.P: You have an important change at the label position. From the german Label Metal Haven to Massacre Records. What were your reasons to change the label, and why did you choose Massacre Records as the new one? Were you not satisfied with Metal Heaven anymore?

M.D: We've nothing bad to say about our last label Metal Heaven. It's a very small company focusing mostly on AOR and melodic stuff and we just felt it was time to get to another level. We sent out some demo-recordings and the best offer came from Massacre. This is an old classic label and I actually have a lot of their releases in my record collection.

J.P: Let us look at the songs of “Killer”. For me „ “Killer”, “Hail the Fallen”, “Spotlight Rebel” and “Dogs on Holy Ground”  are the best songs. Can you tell us something about these songs? Are these also your favorite songs on the album?

M.D: “Killer” was the first song I wrote and the main riff which starts the song plus the twin guitar harmony solo in the middle are from a song I wrote in 1993 called “Crystal Eyes”. It was released on our first official demo in 1994. The other 3 are just classic Heavy Metal songs which probably been inspired from bands like Judas Priest, Accept, Manowar, Ozzy etc. It's always hard to pick a favourite of my own songs but “Spotlight Rebel” is probably my favourite right now.

J.P: What is the main difference between your last record “Chained” and your new record “Killer”?

M.D: The vocals are the big difference and I'm very happy that all reactions are extremely positive about it. Song wise it's probably heavier and more straightforward than before. Another difference is that Niclas is also doing rhythm guitars. Ever since “Vengeance Descending” I've been recording all rhythm guitars myself just to speed up the process and make it sound tighter but Niclas and I play so well together and it did work great.

J.P: When you look back at your long career what things where things which did you wrong or which would you do different today? Perhaps a record which you don't release today as you do it in the past?

M.D: I'm very proud of every single record but I think the first 2 have a pretty awful production but that was nothing we could do about it. If I could foresee the vocalist circus in Crystal Eyes I would diffidently not have left the lead singer position to someone else.

J.P:  What are your music Heroes? What kind of records have you got in your record desk?

M.D:  My favourite bands are Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Manowar, Dio, Helloween, Black Sabbath etc. A couple of favourite records are Iron Maiden – The Number Of The Beast, Judas Priest – Defenders Of The Faith, Queensryche – Operation: Mindcrime, Helloween – Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 1+2 and Accept – Balls To The Wall.

J.P: Mikael what comes next for your band? What’s next for yourself?

M.D: We're rehearsing for the live-set and we can't wait to get out and play with this strong line-up. We're actually have an interested booking agency and things are looking really good.
