Nachdem ich den charismatischen Frontman Pete Ahonen der Band BURNING POINT vor ein paar Jahren schon einmal auf den Zahn gefühlt habe, war mir das neue selbstbetitelte  Album Grund genug den guten Pete nochmal zu kontaktieren.

J.P: Hallo Pete. vielen Dank das du mir ein paar Fragen zu eurem neuen Album und zu euch selbst als Band beantwortest. 3 Jahren nach eurem letzten Album „The Ignitor“ hab ihr ein neues selbstbetiteltes Album am Start. Zurückblickend auf das letzte Album wie zufrieden seid ihr damit noch?

P.A: Hi Julian oh kein Problem es ist mir eine Ehre! Also ich liebe nach wie vor die “The Ignitor” Scheibe, es hatte einige starke Tracks zu bieten. Wie sind nach wie vor sehr zufrieden mit der Produktion, dem Cover und spielen die Songs gerne live. Ganz besonders stolz bin ich aber auf meinem Gesang. Bislang auf jeden Fall meine beste Leistung. Ich kann mich noch gut an einen Kommentar zu meinem Gesang erinnern, jemand schrieb wer zum Teufel singt denn da? :- )

J.P: Zwischenzeitlich hat sich ja einiges getan. Du bist vom Mikrofon zurückgetreten und ihr habt mit der Ex BATTLE BEAST Sängerin Nitte Valo jemand neues für den Gesang und zusätzlich noch dazu zum ersten Mal in der BURNING POINT Geschichte eine Frau. Erzähl doch mal, wie kam es denn dazu und wie kam der Kontakt zu Nitte zu Stande?

P.A:  Ich kam irgendwann an den Punkt wo ich irgendwie alles anders machen wollte. Ich wollte etwas bewegen und drastisch ändern und einfach mal komplett neue Wege bestreiten. Und was ist eine größere Veränderung als wenn man von einem Sänger zu einer Sängerin wechselt : - ). Nitte war meine erste Wahl und ich hab nie an jemand anderes gedacht.
Ich habe sie Ende 2013 kontaktiert und sie gefragt ob sie nach wie vor Musik macht und sich vorstellen könnte bei uns zu singen. Wir schreiben ein bisschen hin und her und nach ein paar ausgetauschten Ideen sagte sie zu. Sie liebte sowohl die alten als auch die neuen Songs und war sehr erfreut sich der Band anschließen zu können.

J.P.: Zusätzlich zur neuen Sängerin habt ihr mit AFM Records ein neues Label. Welches wie ich finde perfekt zu euch passt! Das letzte Album wurde über Scarlet Records veröffentlicht, warum der Wechsel und warum ausgerechnet AFM Records?

P.A:  Yeah die Jungs bei AFM rocken einfach! Also wir hatten für das „The Ignitor“ Album nur einen Deal für dieses Album bei Scarlet. Ohne Option. Dies war für beide Seiten damals ok. Leider waren wir dann mit der Labelpromotionarbeit auch nicht so zufrieden, sie haben das Album nämlich nicht wirklich promotet. Jetzt mit AFM ist das alles anders. Man kümmert sich um uns und um das neue Album und hat viele Ideen am Start.

J.P: Gibt es eine Art roter Faden der sich durch die neuen Songs zieht? Wovon handeln sie?

P.A: Die Texte handeln einfach vom Leben an sich. Ein bisschen was ist aus meinem Leben, manches einfach aus meiner Umgebung und ein bisschen Fiktion ist auch dabei. Liebe, Hass und so weiter halt : - )

J.P: Wie lief denn der Aufnahmeprozess so ab? Von wann bis wann ist das Album genau entstanden?

P.A: Die ersten Aufnahmen haben wir im August 2014 gemacht und die ganzen Songs standen dann eigentlich bis zum September. Nitte hat wirklich großartige Arbeit abgeliefert, sehr professionell und war in 16 Stunden fertig mit ihren Gesangsaufnahmen.
Im Februar 2015 haben wir dann die Choraufnahmen gemacht und Jussi begann dann mit dem Mixen und Mastern. Schlussendlich war alles Anfang Mai fertig.

J.P: Nehmt ihr eigentlich noch komplett als Band auf oder bevorzugt ihr die mittlerweile sehr populäre Methode jeder für sich im stillen Kämmerlein?

P.A:  Unsere Methode ist von Jahr zu Jahr die selbe. Zuerst nehmen wir die Gitarrenspuren auf, danach spielt Jussi die Schlagzeugparts ein. Sami nimmt dann in seinem eigenen Studio die Bassparts auf und Jarkko spielt seine Keyboardparts daheim ein. Dies hat sich einfach als besten Weg für uns herausgestellt.

J.P: Das neue Album bietet sowohl neue Songs als auch Neueinspielungen alter Tracks mit Nitte am Gesang. Wer hatte denn dazu die Idee und wie habt ihr die Auswahl der alten Tracks getroffen? Ich finde die Idee ja wirklich großartig!

P.A: Ich denke ich hatte dazu als erstes die Idee, aber wir arbeiteten dann als Team daran und verwirklichten sie. Es war wirklich nicht einfach die alten Songs dafür auszuwählen, wir haben halt zu viele starke Tracks. Aber „Signs of Danger“ zum Beispiel war Nitte's Favorit und „Dawn of the Ancient“ wurde von Jussi ausgewählt. So hat quasi jeder mit entschieden.
Ja ich stimme dir zu, es ist denke ich der beste Weg unsere Vergangenheit und wo wir uns hinentwickeln wollen zu zeigen. Die alten Songs sind nochmal komplett neu eingespielt und aufgenommen worden und natürlich ist der größte Unterschied zu früher Nitte's Gesang. Es sind also eigentlich keine alten Songs mehr, sondern komplett neue.

J.P: Wo glaubst du könnte denn jetzt der Weg mit Nitte am Mirko hingehen? Seid ihr jetzt variabler unterwegs oder was meinst du bringt die Zukunft für euch?

P.A: : Also wir werden jetzt nicht unsere komplette musikalische Ausrichtung ändern. Wenn du dir unsere Alben von den Anfängen mit „Salvation by Fire“ bis hin zu unserer letzten Scheibe „The Ignitor“ anhörst wirst du merken es ist irgendwie immer das Gleiche, aber doch irgendwie anders.

J.P: Neben BURNING POINT bist du noch bei STARGZAERY und GHOST MACHINERY mit von der Partie. Mit STARGAZERY habt ihr vor kurzem euer zweites Album veröffentlicht, aber wann kann man denn mal wieder etwas Neues aus dem Hause GHOST MACHINERY hören? Wie ist denn da der aktuelle Stand?

P.A: Richtig das zweite STARGAZERY Album erschien im Januar. Hier spielen wir eine komplett andere Richtung als bei BURNING POINT. Mehr Hard Rock basiert halt.
Was GHOST MACHINERY angeht, wir haben gerade das Demo zum neuen Album fertig gestellt und wollen jetzt das Ganze finalisieren. Nachdem wir uns von unserem alten Label Limb Music getrennt haben, suchen wir dafür ein neues. Wir hoffen das wir das Album dieses Jahr noch veröffentlichen können.

J.P: In der Promoinfo vom neuen Album stand das eure alten Alben bald wiederveröffentlicht werden? Erzähl doch mal, wer hatte die Idee dazu und auf was können sich Fans bei diesen Re Releases freuen?

P.A:  Ich glaube AFM kam auf die Idee doch die alten Alben erneut zu veröffentlichen. Wir bekamen immer wieder eine Menge Anfragen der Fans dazu, weil unsere alten Alben kaum noch zu bekommen sind und wenn dann muss man unglaubliche Preise dafür bezahlen.
Ich fand die Idee toll und kramte daher als Bonus noch ein paar Demos von damals und nicht veröffentlichte Songs raus. Oder auch die Japan Bonussachen die nun  erstmal im europäischen Raum erscheinen.
Es lohnt sich also auf jeden Fall sich die Re Releases zuzulegen!

J.P: Pete wie geht es denn jetzt genau bei dir weiter? Was ist als nächstes mit der Band geplant?

P.A: Zu erst einmal steht Proben, Proben und nochmal Proben auf dem Programm. Denn für den Sommer sind einige Live Shows geplant und wir freuen uns schon sehr darauf uns wieder den Fans zu zeigen und für sie zu spielen. Wir haben auch noch einige Anfragen mehr live zu spielen, also hoffentlich kann man uns überall sehen : - ).
Danach werden wir wohl beginnen unser nächstes Album aufzunehmen, was nämlich schon komplett geschrieben ist. Geplant ist es das Ganze Anfang nächsten Jahres zu veröffentlichen.
Für mich persönlich hoffe ich das ich dir richtige Balance finde zwischen BURNING POINT und STARGAZERY. Denn für beide stehen einige Liveauftritte an, das Interesse ist halt groß. Dann hoffe ich natürlich das ich für GHOST MACHINERY ein neues, gutes Label finde und vielleicht gibt es ja auch mal etwas Neues von meinen anderen Projekten UNATIONS und SARCOFAGUS, wer weiß, wer weiß : -)

J.P: Hi Pete Julian from Rock-Garage.com is speaking. Thank you that you answer me a few questions about your new album and BURNING POINT itself.
Three years after the release of your last record „The Ignitor“ your new self titled record is now coming. So when you look back how pleased are you with your last record?

P.A: Hi Julian and no problems, my pleasure :) I love “The Ignitor”, it is awesome killer album with killer tracks. I'm very pleased to the production, artwork, playing, the songs and especially I'm proud of my vocals. Easily my best performance so far. I really tried to push my personal vocal boundaries on that record. I remember one funny comment when someone heard the “Holier Than Thou” for the first time, “ who is singin on this track”? :D

J.P: In the meanwhile a lot of things has happend. Your are stepped back from the singer position and with the Ex BATTLE BEAST Singer Nitte Valo you have someone new for this position. So please tell us why did you step back, why did you choose Nitte and how did you get contact with her?

P.A: Well, I just came to point where I wanted to “stirr the pot” for good! You know, I wanted to make some drastic changes and I tried to think “outside the box”. And what would be a bigger change than change the frontman to a frontwoman :D Nitte was my first choice and I didn't even thought about other singers.
I contacted her late 2013 and asked if she was doing anything concerning music and could she be interested to sing again.  We exchanged few messages, I send some samples and ideas in general. She loved the songs, old and the new stuff, and she was very excited about joining the band.

J.P: Additional to your new singer Nitte you have with AFM Records a new label. I think this was a really good choice, it really match good together. Why did you change the label from Scarlet to AFM Records and why did you choose AFM?

P.A:  Yeah, guys at AFM Rock! Well, basically we just had a deal for the “The Ignitor” album, no options. It was the way wanted and that was ok to Scarlet as well. Unfortunately , the label didn't do basically anything to promote the album which to me is very strange. Now with AFM it has been just great, lots of promotion and constant flow of ideas!

J.P: So what are your lyrics in your new songs? Are there something like a red line between your new songs, a common topic?

P.A: The lyrics are a mix of actual life, life of mine or life around me and a little fiction shuffled together. Love and hate and everything in between :)

J.P: Can you tell us something about the recording process? When did the recording starts and when were they finished?

P.A: We started the basic tracks in August 2014 and all was done in September within only few sessions. Nitte did her “job” like a true professional and it took only 16 hours to sang all the lead-vocals and a whole lot of backing & harmony vocals too. Then we did the last choirs in February 2015 and Jussi took over the mixing process. Mixing and mastering were ready in early May.

J.P: Did you recording as a whole band or did you prefer the new popular method to record everyone alone at home?

P.A: Our method has been for years the same, first we go to the studio to lay down the guitar tracks, Jussi plays the drums next. Sami recorded his bass in our little studio, but Jarkko played the keyboards at home.This has proven to be the easiest way and no matter who says what, there is NO need to lay down the drums and bass first! :)

J.P: Your new record has got new songs and as well new recordings of old tracks on it. Who has the idea for that and how did you choose the old songs? I think this would be a great choose and idea!

P.A: I think it was initially my idea, but we worked as a team to make it happen. It was very hard to choose the songs from the so many great tracks, but for example “Signs of danger” was one of the Nitte's favourites from the debyt and the “Dawn of the ancient war” was chosen by Jussi etc. Yeah, absolutely this is the best way to show where we come from, where we are and to where we are heading to! You have to remember that all the older songs are completely re-recorded and of course the biggest change is Nitte's vocals! So, although they are “old” songs, they definitively sound like the new stuff! :)

J.P:  Now with Nitte as your singer what do you think are you more variable or how did you sound in the future?

P.A:  We are not going to change the way we sound musically. If you listen our older albums from the debyt “Salvation by fire” to the “The Ignitor”, you'll notice that the we've kept the consistency between the albums. It's always the same, but still different.

J.P: With some BURNING POINT Members you have two other bands with GHOST MACHINERY and STARGAZERY. With STARGAZERY you released a few months earlier a new record, but when can we hear news from the GHOST MACHINERY camp? How is the status of the band and perhaps did you work at a new record?

P.A: Yes, 2nd STARGAZERY album was released in January. It is very different of what BP plays, more like good 'ol hard rock with stadium size choruses :) As for the GHOST MACHINERY, we just got a raw mix of the whole album ready and we're scheduling it to be mastered. We are looking for a new label as we decided to part ways with Limb Music. So,hopefully we'll get the album released later this year.

J.P:  The promo info tells me that your older records would be re-released by AFM Records in the next month, so who has the idea and can the fans expect some specials on them?

P.A: I think it was AFM who suggested that we should re-release the older ones too. Actually we've received a lot of requests from the fans that where to purchase the older ones and with a decent price. I love the idea of re-releasing them and I digged through BP-archives to get unreleased tracks as a bonus. There will be some demo versions and songs that has been on Japanese editions and will be released first time in Europe etc. So, definitively a worthy releases!

J.P: Pete what comes next for the band? What’s next for yourself?

P.A:  Rehearsals, rehearsals and then it is few live shows in the summer/autumn and we are very excited to go out and play the stuff to the fans! Hopefully there will be some foreign shows as well as we get so many requests to play everywhere :) And also we will start to record our next album. We've already written the next album and it will be all new songs and it is scheduled to be released spring 2016.
As for myself, I'm balancing between BURNING POINT and STARGAZERY shows in the summer as they both has booked shows :) Also I hope I can find a suitable label for the GHOST MACHINERY album, maybe we continue recordings with few of our project band UNATIONS and SARCOFAGUS...and and and phewwww hahahahahha :D No rest for the wicked !
