Auf ihrer aktuellen Headliner Tour quer durch Deutschland, bekam ich die Möglichkeit vor der Show in Mannheim mit dem Sänger von CIVIL WAR Nils Patrik Johansson einen kleinen Plausch über die aktuelle Tour sowie das Debüt Album zu halten.
Lest nun was der Gute Patrik und zu sagen hat

J.P: Hallo Patrik Vielen Dank das du mir so kurz vor der Show ein paar Fragen zu eurem neuen Album und zu euch selbst als Band beantwortest. Zuerst einmal und für die Leute die euch noch nicht so kennen, stell dich und die Band vielleicht doch kurz mal vor und gib uns einen kurzen Rückblick auf die Bandhistorie.

P.J: Also alles fing eigentlich damit an, das mir ein Freund erzählte das die restlichen Jungs damals SABATON verlassen und weiter Musik machen wollten.
Und ich sagte dann zu ihm dass sie mir nur Bescheid sagen bräuchten, falls sie einen Sänger suchen, ich stände parat! Er war ein guter Freund unseres Schlagzeugers Daniel Mulback und erzählte ihm was ich gesagt hatte und kurz darauf rief er mich an. Alles also sehr einfach!
Für mich ist es denke ich eine gute Gelegenheit ein neues Publikum zu erreichen außer den ASTRAL DOORS Fans.

JP: Eine ganz aktuelle Frage, gestern habe ich gelesen das ihr beim österreichischen Label Napalm Records einen neuen Vertrag unterschrieben habt, ist das richtig?

P.J: Das stimmt! Wir hoffen das die uns neue Wege ermöglicht und eine besser Promotion garantiert. Unser erstes Label Despotz Records war da leider nicht sehr gut. Sie sind zwar sehr erfahren und groß auf dem schwedischen Markt, aber außerhalb Schwedens haben sie keine guten Kontakte. Sie haben wirklich keine gute Arbeit abgeliefert und deswegen sind wir auch sehr enttäuscht!
Mit Napalm ist es also ein neuer Beginn-

J.P: Die erste Frage geht natürlich in Richtung eures Debütalbums. Wie seid ihr denn mit den Verkäufen und den Reaktionen der Presse zufrieden? Was ist denn alles passiert nach Veröffentlichung des Albums?

P.J: Wir hatten wirklich fantastisch Reaktion auf das Album. Die Rezensionen dazu waren sehr gut. Ich denke wir haben da wirklich ein starkes Album aufgenommen!
Wir sind sehr zufrieden mit dem Album und dem Ergebnis! In Schweden sind wir mittlerweile recht bekannt und ich Europa wachsen wir auch und hoffen das wir dort einen ähnlichen Erfolg haben werden, wie wir es in Schweden haben.
Dieser Unterschied kommt daher, das die Platte einfach nicht genug Leute erreicht hat; Stichwort schlechte Promotion seitens Despotz Record.

J.P: Gab es eigentlich irgendwelche Reaktionen, positive wie negative, von SABATON Fans, weil ihr ja zu 80 % aus Ex SABATON Mitgliedern besteht und auch ähnliche Musik macht?

P.J: Ich denke die meisten von ihnen mögen unsere Musik. 99 % der Fans mögen uns also. Die Jungs von SABATON sind mehr Mainstream mäßig unterwegs. Sie haben eine sehr große Fanbase die jede Altersschicht beinhaltet. Unsere Songs sind wesentlich komplexer als die von SABATON. Natürlich werden wir nie so groß sein wie SABATON, aber hey wir sind auch gut, aber verfolgen einfach einen anderen Weg!

J.P: Du hast ja nun mit ASTRAL DOORS und CIVL WAR zwei große Bands am Start. Bekommst du das soweit organisatorisch hin oder glaubst das es da irgendwann einmal Probleme geben könnte?

P.J: Ich denke das werden wir sehen. Aktuell gibt es keine Probleme und alles funktioniert wunderbar. ASTRAL DOORS hat seine Fans und CIVIL WAR auch.
ASTRAL DOORS ist mehr riff basiert wie BLACK SABBATH und CIVIL WAR geht mehr in die Heavy Metal Ecke, beide haben also ihre eigenen Fankreise.

J.P: Wie stehen deine ASTRAL DOORS Bandmitglieder eigentlich zu deiner zweiten Band?

P.J: Sie haben damit überhaupt kein Problem! Ich habe ja noch mehr Bands, WUTHERING HEIGHTS und LIONS SHARE zum Beispiel. Jede Band hat einfach seine Zeit und seinen Zeitpunkt!

J.P: Kommen wir mal auf dem Hauptgrund des Interviews, eure Tour zu sprechen. Wie waren denn die bisherigen Konzerte und was erwartest du noch von der restlichen Tour?

P.J: Bis jetzt haben wir zwei Konzerte in Polen gespielt. Die waren echt großartig! Ok es war kein besonders großes Publikum, 150 Leute vielleicht, aber es war trotzdem gut. Für die heutige Zeit ist das ok und man muss damit leben!
Was erwarte ich für den Rest der Tour? Also als wir uns damals entschlossen diese Tour zu machen wussten wir nicht das Despotz so einen schlechten Promotionjob gemacht hat! Wir dachten dass sie eine etwas bessere Promotion für uns gemacht haben.
Als wir das bemerkten war es schon zu spät. Ok es ist unsere erste Tour, eine Headliner Tour sogar und die sind immer nicht einfach. Es ist halt unser erster Schritt, wir hoffen das die Leute und die Veranstalter uns sehen und gut finden und somit unsere nächste Tour erfolgreicher wird.

J.P: In Deutschland spielt ihr sehr viele Konzerte. Wie wichtig ist der deutsche Markt für euch?

P.J: Deutschland ist auf jeden Fall unser größter und wichtigster Markt, ganz klar! Bei ASTRAL DOORS ist das übrigens genauso. Ich hoffe das ist bei CIVIL WAR dann auch so. Deswegen spielen wir auch sechs Shows hier in Deutschland.

J.P: Wenn ich richtig gelesen habe, werdet ihr auf der Tour nicht nur CIVIL WAR Songs spielen, sondern auch ein paar Überraschungen und ein paar SABATON Klassiker sollen auch am Start sein, richtig? Wie kam es denn zu dieser Entscheidung?

P.J: Natürlich erzähle ich dir was darüber. Zuerst dachten wir es wäre eine gute Idee ein paar bekannte SABATON Songs auf unseren Konzerten zu spielen. Aber dann merkten wir ziemlich schnell das das unsere Fans gar nicht wollten, sie wollten unsere Songs hören, keine SABATON Songs!
Zum Beispiel bei unserem ersten Konzert haben wir „Primo Victoria“ von SABATON gespielt, aber die Leute mochten das überhaupt nicht und schrien, „keine SABATON Songs mehr, wir wollen CIVIL WAR!“ Das war ein großartiges Gefühl und wir haben daher alle SABATON Songs aus unser Setliste gestrichen.

J.P: Noch eine private Frage an dich. Wenn man Facebook Glauben schenken mag, bist du auch ein großer Sportfan. In diesem Jahr schaut natürlich jeder in Richtung Olympische Winterspiele und der Fußball WM. Eine kurzes Statement von dir als Sportfan vielleicht zu beiden Großereignisse und wer ist dein Topfavorit auf dem WM Titel?

P.J: Ja das stimmt alles auf jeden Fall! Wir versuchen natürlich die Olympischen Spiele zu verfolgen, speziell natürlich das Eishockey Turnier der schwedischen Mannschaft. Ich versuche davon wirklich so viel wie möglich mit zu bekommen. Unser Team hat die Chance eine Medaille zu gewinnen, keine Goldene zwar, dafür haben wir zu viele Verletzte, aber ein bisschen was wird gehen!
Und zum Fußball, also da das Turnier ja in Brasilien stattfindet wird entweder Brasilien oder Argentinien Weltmeister werden. Die beiden kommen einfach am besten mit den Verhältnissen dort zu recht.
Immer nach der Statistik wenn das Turnier in Europa ist, gewinnt eine europäische Mannschaft, ist es in Südamerika, dann eine Mannschaft von dort.

J.P: Patrik wie geht es denn jetzt genau bei dir und der Band weiter? Ist nach der Tour ein weiteres Album geplant? Gibt es bei dir sonst Neuigkeiten zum Beispiel aus dem ASTRAL DOORS Lager?

P.J:  Die nächsten Schritte für CIVIL WAR werden auf jeden Fall ein paar freie Tage sein, wenn wir von der Tour zurück sind. Aber schon kurz darauf brechen wir wieder auf in den Norden von Schweden, dort spielen auf dem House of Metal Festival. Das wird großartig werden!
Danach machen wir uns so langsam an die Vorproduktion des neuen Albums, welche wir natürlich ordentlich über die Bühne bringen wollten. Also ja es wird relativ zeitnah ein neues Album von uns geben.
Mit den Jungs von ASTRAL DOORS arbeite ich ebenfalls an einer neuen Scheibe. Das kann ich recht gut parallel machen, da ich viel in meinem Studio zu Hause aufnehmen kann. Mal schauen, wir werden das Album über Metalville vermutlich vor der neuen CIVIL WAR Scheibe veröffentlichen, denn direkt aufeinander zwei Scheiben zu veröffentlichen ist nicht gut.
Was LIONS SHARE betrifft, also wir haben zwar Songs, 10 ungefähr, aber da unser Label bankrottgegangen ist müssen wir jetzt erstmal etwas abwarten, aber wir haben es auch nicht eilig.
Als letztes dann noch WUTHERING HEIGHTS. Leider pausiert die Band aktuell, das der Gründer und Mastermind der Band große Probleme mit dem Rücken hat. Wir werden da sehen was passiert…

J.P: Vielen Dank Patrik für deine Zeit und die interessanten Antworten im Zuge dieses Interviews! Ich wünsche euch alles Gute für die Zukunft und noch eine schöne Tour! Die letzten Worte gehören natürlich dir.

P.J: Ich möchte einfach nur allen danke sagen dass sie uns so unterstützt haben! Und für die Fans die uns oder mich noch nicht kennen, checkt einfach mal unsere Songs, ihr werden sehen es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall, es rockt gewaltig!!

J.P: Hi Patrik thank you that you answer me a few questions shortly before your show.
First of all for those people who didn’t know you and your band, can you please say something about you and the bandhistory?

P.J: Yeah we came together when the other two guys left SABATON. A friend of me told me that they left SABATON and he told me that they want continue with music. And i say to him, well if they want i’am ready! He is a good friend of our drummer Daniel Mulback so he told him that and then Daniel called me. Very easy! I think for me is this a chance to get another audience then the ASTRAL DOORS Fans.

JP: Very actually, i heard yesterday you sign a new contract with the Austria label Napalm Records. Is this right?

P.J: Oh yes! We hope that that is our chance to get more promoted. Because our frist record company Despotz Record, they are good in Sweden, but not outsight the country. They did really a bad job and we are very disappointed!
So with Napalm it feeled like a new start.

J.P: The first question is certainly about your debut record. Are you satisfied about the reactions of the press and the fans? What has happened after the release of the record?

P.J:  Well we have fantastic reviews. I really feel that we made a strong album! We are very pleased with the record and the result! In Sweden we are very big, in Europe, well we are grown and hope to reach the success which we have in Sweden. This different depends on the point that the record did not reach enough people. Bad promotion from Despotz Record.

J.P: Were there any reactions, positive and negative, of SABATON Fans, because you have 80 % of old SABATON musicians in the band and you have similar sounds in your music?

P.J: I think most of them like it, so we have 99 % of people who like it. The SABATON guys are more mainstream oriented. They have a large fancrowd of every age. Our Songs are more complex than SABATON. Sure we are never so big than SABATON, but yeah we are good too, but in a different way!

J.P: With ASTRAL DOORS and CIVIL WAR you have now two main bands. Can organize that or did you think you should have in the future some problems with that?

P.J: We will see, it will works actually and we work at a new ASTRAL DOORS album. I think it will be no problem. ASTRAL DOORS has their fans and CIVIL WAR too. ASTRAL DOORS is more riff based like BLACK SABBATH and CIVIL WAR is more Heavy Metal, so both have their own fans.

J.P: Have the other ASTRAL DOORS bandmembers any problems with your situation singing in two main/big bands?

P.J: No absolutely not! I have more bandprojects you know, WUTHERING HEIGHTS and LIONS SHARE. Each band has it’s time!

J.P: Let us go the main point of this interview, your tour. How were the shows till yet and what did you expect for the rest of the tour?

P.J: We have two gigs in Poland. It was very great! Ok it was no big audience, 150 people maximum. But it was good. That’s ok these days!
So what i expect for the tour? Well as we agree to make this tour we didn’t know that Despotz make a poor promotion job! We thought that they make a little bit more promotion for us.
As we realized that, yeah we are sure that this first tour, our headline tour, will be a little bit risky. It is our first step, we hope that the crowd and the promoters see us our next tour will be better!

J.P: You play many shows here in Germany. How important is the German market and the German fans for you?

P.J: It is our biggest market of course! With ASTRAL DOORS too. So i hope it will be the same with CIVL WAR. That’s why we do six gigs here in Germany.

J.P: When i read it right, you won’t only play CIVIL WAR songs at the shows, right? You have some surprises and some SABATON classics too, right? Can you tell us what songs they are and why have you made this decision?

P.J: Sure i can talk about it. At first we thought it would be a good idea to play a couple of SABATON songs. But then we realized, that the fans who come to our concert they want not to hear SABATON songs, the want to hear CIVIL WAR songs!
So we just play only CIVIL WAR songs.
For example at the first gig we play “Primo Victoria” from SABATON, but the people don’t like it and scream no more SABATON Songs, we want CIVL WAR! So that was a great feeling! And we kick out the SABATON Songs!

J.P: A short private question. If i can trust Facebook you are a big sport fan, right? The main sports events this year are certainly the Olympic games and the football world championship in Brazil. What do you think about these two main events and who is your favorite at the football championship?

P.J: We try to watch the Olympic Games especially the ice hockey of the Swedish team. I try to follow it as much as i can. Our ice hockey team have a chance to get a medal but not win the gold medal. We have too much injury’s for that!
And football, well it is in Brazil, so i think Brazil or Argentina will win the tournament.  Because when the tournament is in Europe a European team wins, if it’s in South America, a team of that country wins. That’s an statistic thing.

J.P: So what comes next for CIVIL WAR? Is a new record planned? What are the next steps for you and ASTRAL DOORS? A new record, perhaps, too? : - )

P.J: The next step for CIVIL WAR when come home from this tour we have a couple of days rest and then we go to the north of Sweden to play the House of Metal Festival. This would be very great. And then we want to make a good preproduction of the new record. We plan to release it in October this year.
With ASTRAL DOORS i work at the same time at new songs in my home studio. Perhaps we can release it again over Metalville before the new CIVIL WAR record, because it is not good to release the two records at the same time.
And with LIONS SHARE, well we have songs, i think 10 songs. But our record company is bankrupt, but we have no hurry.
And WUTHERING HEIGHTS, the band paused actually because the bandmaster has problems with his back, so we will we say what happened.

J.P: Thank you Patrik for your time, and for the interesting answers! I wish you all the best for the future and for the tour, the last words, of course are yours.
