ASTRAL DOORS

ENGLISH VERSION BELOW!

Für mich sind “The Last Temptation of Christ”, “Disciples of the Dragon Lord”, “Desert Nights” und “In the Name of Rock” die hervorstechenden Songs, obwohl das gesamte Album sehr stark ist.

J.N: “The Last Temptation of Christ” und  “Disciples of the Dragon Lord” sind meine absoluten Favoriten.

Was ist dir besonders positiv in Erinnerung geblieben und was eher negativ?

ENGLISH VERSION:

J.P: Hi Joachim Julian from Rock-Garage.com is speaking. Thank you that you answer me a few questions about your new album and ASTRAL DOORS itself.
How are you, and where are you actually for answering my questions?

J.N: Hello Julian! I'm fine thank you. It's very hot in Sweden right now and i'm back home after a two week vacation with my family. We have a caravan so we got the chance to see a lot of our beautiful country.

J.P: The Mainpoint for these interview is of course your new record „Notes from the Shadows“ which release is near. So tell us please when did you start the recording process and how was it?

J.N: Well, we started writing songs for this album in January. And since we are writing in my studio we pretty much record it at the same time. Everything was finished in April so it went pretty fast. Everybody in the band have the possibility to record their own things so that's one reson it went this fast.

J.P: Is there a special lyrical concept on the new record?

J.N: I don't think you can call it a concept but it deals with the dark side of things. It's Patrik that writes all the lyrics so i'm not that in to what it's all about. I know that “Walker the stalker” is about a relative to Patrik that's gone mad somehow, haha.

J.P: Let us look at the songs of “Notes from the Shadows”. For me „ “The Last Temptation of Christ”, “Disciples of the Dragon Lord”, “Desert Nights” and “In the Name of Rock”  are the best songs, although the whole record is very strong. Can you tell us something about these songs? Are these also your favorite songs on the album?

J.N: Temptation and Desciples are my favourites. And maybe “Wailing wall”. In the name of rock is from an idea that Patrik had. He wanted to do a very basic song that was built upon a groove. And desert nights is from an idea that Ulf had. It's a very different song from what you normaly here from us, but I think it turned out great. I think that Disciples is one of the coolest songs we have ever written. It sounds like something between Accept and Queensryche I think. And Temptation was the obvious opener for the album. A straight forward fast song that I think will be a new classic live tune for us.

J.P: When you compare the new with the previous record. What is the main difference between your last record “Jerusalem” and your new record “Notes from the Shadows”?

J.N: One main different is how it sounds. “Jerusalem” has a more old school sound and the new one has a more modern sound to it wich I like more. And “Jerusalem” was the first record that I was the only guitarplayer, so I didn't do that many overdubs as I wanted, just becauce of that. So it sounds more primitive in my ears. On “notes from...” you can here a lot of twin guitar stuff, things that I love so much. So maybe we have to bring a second guitarplayer when we play live.

J.P: Generally i mean the whole record sounds a little bit dark and gloomy. What was that reason for that sound? Had you a special lifesituation when you work at the record?

J.N: Ok, I don't get those feelings listening to it. Yes, it's a pretty dark record lyric wise, but overall I get happy listening to it in all the darkness, haha.

J.P: You looking back on a career with seven records. When you look back, what is most positively you remembered and what is rather negative?

J.N: The most positive experience is the tour we did with Blind Guardian back in 2006. A seven week long tour with so much fun! Overall I think we should have toured more, that's on the negative side. We have said no to many good offers. If we had said yes more often I think we had been a bigger band today.

J.P: Your singer Patrik has actually another successfully band with CIVIL WAR. He sings in two another bands. Have you personally a problem with that generally? Have you got any organisational problems in fact of that?

J.N: No, I have no problems with that. I have my own things beside Astral Doors so I can't complain about that. So far we haven't had any organisational problems becauce of it.

J.P: Afterwards question. You have with SKY OF RAGE also a second band. How satisfied are you with the band and the success and how is the status of the band? I think many fans await a second record?

J.N: Sky of Rage is history today. We made a pretty decent album and did a few shows, but for me it was just a project. So you won't see another album there. Me and Johan started SunStrike after that and we released a record this spring. SunStrike is also just another side project we have when Patrik doing his other things. Me and Johan has a lot of thing going on in tha shadows :-).

J.P: Again a jump into the past. 2012 you came with a headlinertour to germay. I was in Frankfurt and saw your show. Which memories have you when you think about these tour, how was the success? Did you plan nearly another tour?

J.N: It was an ok tour. Not that crowded in germany but Hugary and Poland it was packed! So I think we made a lot of new fans there. We have just started working with a new booker and he is currently working on something for us. I think we have some dates set in January already. Where it is I can't say right now :-). And we are going to play in our hometown Borlänge in november. And hopefully we have some festival next summer, that would be great!

J.P: The last question, at the same tour I interviewed Patrik and he told me that you work on an Live DVD. How is the status here? I think many fans wait! : -)

J.N: Yes I know. It was ment to be recorded spring 2013. But Johans daughter got cancer just when we started with the plans, so we put it on ice. So now I don't know when it's gonna be. We haven't talked about it since then. She got well anyway and that's good.

J.P: Thank you Joachim for your time, and for the interesting answers! I wish you all the best for the future.

J.N: Thanks for having me. Hope to see you out on the road sometime!

Julian
